dawn at Lake Ella

4/9/2021 – Friday

In a rare feat of self motivation, I hurled myself out of bed at 5 am! This had nothing to with discipline but rather incoming rain. I had the foresight to check the weather app last night, which said big storms would be moving in this morning. Weather app is, usually, incorrect about the timing these predictions, but not always, so it would have been risky to count on it.

As it was, we were out by 5:15 am and the rain just starting drizzling by the time we made it home. All in all, a good decision was made!

Here is Keely, looking for the Intermittent Fox while waiting for rain:keely in the shadows

It was a productive morning because I possibly saved a turtle. (Tortoise? I have no idea.) It was in a roadside gutter, and while it might have eventually crawled to safety, it was in a precarious position. Thinking of the body of the duck I saw in the street yesterday, which had clearly been hit by a car, I gingerly picked up the turtle and moved him over to some bushes by the pond. I know there are snapping turtles in the pond but either this guy was not one of them or just a lazy one, but we all came out of it unscathed. Keely was very confused but did not harass the turtle, and soon we were back on schedule.

As I write this, the rain has moved in decisively, so it is dark and moody out, which is my favorite kind of day. Still a work day, but not a bad day, and I’ll take what I can get.
