dawn at Lake Ella

4/29/2020 – Wednesday

I am writing this on lunch break as I was running late and had to log into work at 8 am. Not sure why I slept in, I feel fine, but I guess it’s just the nature of 2020 — random schedules and no concept of time!

Keely, once awakened (which always takes a while) was keen to get out and walking so we hoofed it out the door just a little after 7 am. Since it was dawn by then, I took this shot of the copse of pine trees behind my apartment. I think they are about 40 feet tall and they sway with terrifying grace during hurricanes, but this morning they were gilded with the cresting sun.

When I think of Florida, this is the image that comes to my mind, as bright sun on tall pines is really what I saw most of when we first moved here in the mid-1980s. We rented a small house in Altamonte Springs and it was surrounded by pine trees. Poppa hated suburbia and Mother hated anything that reminded her that she wasn’t rich anymore, so we did not stay there long. But the pines…yeah, that is Florida to me, even now.

It was, at least, a pleasant morning for weather, bright and clear and cool. The pollen wasn’t too bad but I keep wearing my face mask, mostly in an effort to normalize it in our society since I don’t actually get near people while walking Keely. I think this is something that, culturally, is going to be with us from here on out. I don’t mind, I’ve always liked the aesthetic of face masks and I prefer anonymity in public anyway.

(Although to note, I’m a middle aged white woman, so wearing masks of any kind is not something that make me look threatening, which is not true for a lot of minorities in our country. We have so far to go…)
