dawn at Lake Ella

5/11/2021 – Tuesday

Feeling more rested, we actually got out of the house well before 6 a.m., so while it was already 70°F outside there was the lingering coolness of night to enjoy.

A couple of things I noticed as we walked, the more important one being the utter lack of duck broods this year. Canada Geese had a few goslings, most of which are already well into their colors now, but ducks? I can’t remember the last time I saw any ducklings tumbling around their mothers. Last year saw several very large shared broods in addition to a number of smaller ones, but not this year. I know duck sex was happening (you really can’t miss it, no matter how much you want to) but no ducklings. I wonder if it is the fox, eating well on eggs? Or did repeated cold snaps wipe them out? Both? We’ll see in a few weeks if more show up. It’s interesting, and kind of sad.

The other note is less surprising, which is the the owners of the cafe have taken down the signs on its doors and windows. Spring cleaning? Or closing down? There was evidence a few weeks ago of interior work being done such as painting, and the tables and chairs are all still in place, and the large sign facing Monroe remains. As I have mentioned before, I don’t hold out much optimism for that particular venture for a variety of reasons, but we’ll see if this is just a makeover or not.

Today’s picture is not very poetic, but struck me as a very Floridian view of a corner of the pond. Those are cypress trees amongst the pines and palmettos, and the grey-blue morning sky hinting at clouds. I just liked the composition and the colors and the reflections.
