dawn at Lake Ella

6/30/2022 – Thursday

As always, Thursday is a slow start. I think it’s because I work very hard on Wednesdays when I go with my friend Gina to the co-working event at Domi Station — it’s not even about being at an erstwhile “office,” it’s that we spend a lot of time talking about our projects and working on things and checking in on each other. It’s basically six hours of non-stop brain power, and it is great!!! …but also, yes, a bit exhausting.

We followed up by going to a live-reading event at Midtown Reader, which is an independent bookshop here in, you guessed it, midtown! It was fun and there were a couple of stand out readers, a couple of cringe-y readers, and a few who did okay. As I told Gina, I think the main issue is that most people did not understand the assignment, that is, a story meant to be read aloud is structurally its own unique thing. Not all good short stories will capture an audience when read aloud. This isn’t me saying “gosh I could do better!” because honestly I’m pretty crap at short stories in general. Just an observation.

All that said, it was a late and lamentably sunny start to our morning, but at least the rains yesterday chased away the worst of the heat. I saw this stump down on Thomasville Road (it’s behind the Sign-o-Rama store). I remember when it was a tree, and I miss it, but it had rotted out so needed to come down. Life (uh) finds a way, though:
