dawn at Lake Ella

8/20/2020 – Thursday

This morning was not exactly cool but neither was it oppressively hot, so in comparison, it was relatively pleasant. We were out a little later, after 6 am, so dawn was already sneaking up on the horizon.

Keely was torn between keeping to the far edge of the sidewalk away from all the wet stuff left over from yesterday afternoon’s brief but torrential downpours and poking her head in every bush and scouting every tree for pee-mail updates left for her overnight. *rolls eyes* but we finally got all the way around the park.

Large rolls of sod are in the southern parking lot, ready to go over the ground where the gazebos once stood. So, clearly, no new construction happening there. No shade for picnic parties or homeless people, I guess.

There were a couple of joggers I had not seen before, and I suspect they might be doing laps from the Crossfit gym at the corner of 7th and Monroe.

Meanwhile, and F45 gym is opening up at the corner of Thomasville and 6th, on the second floor of the old hotel there that’s been under renovation for most of the year so far. Which means that within a three block radius we will have: Crossfit Midtown, Orange Theory Midtown, Sweat Therapy, Queen’s Fitness, and F45. There is also a yoga studio opening in the failed escape room space next to Bruegger’s Bagels.

This obsession with fitness is a huge business, never more so than in a pandemic, I suppose. Yet, Americans continue to have terrible health and fitness metrics. It’s the food and the lifestyle, of course, and I’m living proof of that, but good luck trying to find a solution that isn’t pain, struggle, and deprivation — and also isn’t in direct contradiction to every other solution out there. *shrugs*

I still maintain that general health should be simple. It really should. Barring illnesses/diseases and disorders, our bodies were mostly designed to operate functionally (optimally, of course, is something else).

You know who I see are the most dedicated exercisers? Fat people. Interesting, huh?

No one ever learns, we all just want comfortable answers, even if they don’t really work.
