This photo is from this weekend, but I noticed it last weekend. I just thought maybe it was a temporary closure for repairs or something, but no, looks like….Sonic on Monroe closed down?
Not sure why, as it was always busy, although I did notice a constant “Now hiring!” sign so I’m assuming that was a factor. There is also a near-permanent “Now hiring!” sign at Hopkins sandwich shop in the Publix Lake Ella Plaza. Honestly, when I see a place that churns through the “Now hiring!” signs, I figure they are run by terrible people who a) don’t pay well and b) treat staff like pack mules.
Just to be clear: even mules should not be treated like pack mules.
It’s interesting to be riding the edge of the dusk of American “greatness” (sarcasm fully in place); so many people trying to act “normal” about “now hiring!” but then undercutting their own best interests with greed and lack of vision. Late stage capitalism is a nihilistic paradigm, even for the so-called winners, because eventually their high will crash. Admittedly, the bell curve of “normal” is always shifting, but it took several hits between rising fascism and the pandemic that so many people aren’t willing to acknowledge; the pre-existing fractures in our society revealed by those earthquakes aren’t being healed, they are just getting wider.
