dawn at Lake Ella

4/5/2020 – Sunday

This morning was dreary and humid, and also a short walk due to rain spitting at us in a threatening manner. Turns out I was overly cautious but by the time I realized that, Keely was post-breakfasting, flat out on my (our?) bed and snoring.

We did a the 3rd Avenue loop, taking the alleyways to the Finnegan’s Wake plaza which remains mostly dark. I think the only business that is not closed “for the duration” is Midtown Pies, and even so it is only open limited hours for pick up/delivery. Is it really the apocalypse if you can still order pizza, though?

Walking past Lake Ella Manor I saw the the entire main entrance was haphazardly blocked off and, to set the mood, the awning was falling down.

It is the senior living center next to the Senior Center, and I think has been steadily declining in residents for a while now (I assume the owner is hoping to sell it off or turn it into apartments once the last few residents die off?). It is the only place I’ve seen that’s been quite so dramatic about “closing” but they do have a particularly susceptible demographic there, so I can’t judge.

But I do judge how many people are out and about. I can’t fault walkers who mostly are traveling alone or in pairs, such as myself, and keeping a good distance from each other. Yet, even this early on a Sunday there are plenty of cars around, and the Circle K is busy, and…yes, I want to believe that the people riding 4 to a car are carpooling to their essential jobs. I do.

I try to hide in music or daydreaming during these walks for the most part, but right now it’s hard for me to push myself out of the trauma zone. What I hope is that today I will get home and do something other than cry.
