dawn at Lake Ella

6/17/2020 – Wednesday

It was blessedly cool today, still in the upper sixties (68°F when we left the house) but lower humidity with a light breeze so it was just delightful.

I was sore, though, as I’ve taken up a light stretching routine before bed — not quite yoga, but more than nothing, and only for about 20 minutes. Still, I can tell how atrophied my muscles and tendons have become with over six months of lack of action. Three of those months have been WFH months as well, so not even in the minimal activity of walking and moving around at the office. I have been walking Keely, of course, but that is essentially the only thing.

It has made a difference already in that I can FEEL my body again. It is fascinating and horrifying what even mild anxiety and depression can do to our sense of “self”, divorcing our awareness from our actual body and turning it inside to a vast abyss of overwhelming fear and shame. Getting past that is less recovery than retrieval.

So, as sore as I was as the result of my very minor attempt to reconnect with my body, it was a beautiful morning and a lovely walk.

There were more people out, which I think has less to do with restrictions lifting (there were no restrictions on the park, after all) than with people perhaps just settling in with our new reality. Even if Florida does not go on lockdown again (although it SHOULD, ffs, I’m so angry at our corrupt and inhumane government) society has irrevocably changed. I, personally, don’t mind that at all, but it took a few months to resettle I think.

Such as it is, there were many people out enjoying the weather and the sunrise, and that I think is a good thing.
