dawn at Lake Ella

11/16/2020 – Monday

Back to work day, but also a WFH day, so there is a real friction between my need to be lazy and my need to log on to work at 8 a.m.

It was, at least, a cooler morning. Still a bit humid so the 54°F temp did not feel as cold as it might have otherwise.

[break]

I got started on this then called away to do actual day!job work, left the tab open, and forgot about it. That’s how my Monday went! Hope yours was less discombobulated!

I don’t have much excitement to report for my walk, but it was very introspective. I participated in Gina Edwards’ “Women Writing for Change” online writers retreat over the weekend, which was intense and enlightening. I normally don’t consider myself a woman “writing for change” but Gina would argue with me about that and now, having done the retreat, I think she’s right: I am writing for change.

In fiction, writing for change is about creating stories and characters that readers connect with, who are representations of their fears and hopes and dreams and traumas and triumphs. I was thinking, as I walked around the pond during the crack of dawn, about how I want the characters I write about to affect readers. Usually I zero in on story and plot and worldbuilding but there is something to be said for pushing outside of my comfort zone to bring my message (of hope, of compassion, of second chances, of love, of courage) to readers.

Gonna try.
