dawn at Lake Ella

3/3/2021 – Wednesday

This morning was chilly again, due to all the rain. Winter in Florida has always been a crap shoot of temperatures, but at least the fact that “big rainstorm means a cold front” has held true even with all the climate change non-sense going on. I was, at least, prepared.

Since we got out by 5:30 am, the park was quiet and empty. I will give the anti-homeless measures credit in that they have, indeed, reduced the number of homeless people sleeping (living) around Lake Ella. It made me think of how Republicans are so determined that everything needs to look good without fixing the underlying problems — slap a coat of paint on the rotted wood of our social safety net infrastructure and call it a day, I guess. At least you don’t have to smell the homeless people at the park!

But the homeless people are still out there, just worse off and more exposed to the elements.

It was cold. People die in weather like this, even in balmy Florida. Some people simply do not care about that and never will.

Later, I took a photo on my way to the office, which I think captures a little of the cold majesty of a wall of clouds:

During the morning walk I finished listening to the Freakonomics podcast about boredom, which of course focused on industrial psychology and how to keep workers from getting bored on the job. Still, it gave me a lot to think about as I walked the same boring route we walk every morning. That’s okay though, because the familiarity of it makes it easy.

If every morning were a new, untested and high-adrenaline adventure around the park I’d never leave my house! Ha!

I think there is a lot to think about between the intersection of “what makes me happy” and “what bores me” and “what do I want to do?” In the meantime I need to get things done.
